Greyhounds are elegant, gentle companions, but when the temperature drops, they feel it more than most! Unlike many other breeds, greyhounds have thin skin and a single layer of short fur, meaning they don’t have much natural insulation. Their sleek build makes them wonderfully aerodynamic on the track and doing zoomies in the garden, but not so great when it comes to chilly weather.

If you share your home with one of these graceful hounds, it’s important to help them stay warm, cosy, and comfortable throughout autumn and winter. Here’s how to do it:

1. Invest in a Good Quality Coat

A warm, well-fitted coat is essential for any greyhound once the temperature starts to dip. Look for coats designed specifically for sighthounds; they’re cut deeper in the chest and longer in the back to fit their unique shape. Waterproof outer layers with a fleece or quilted lining are perfect for wet, cold walks.

2. Add a Snood for Extra Warmth

Greyhounds lose a lot of body heat through their neck and ears. A snood (a soft, stretchy neck warmer) can help keep these sensitive areas cosy. They’re ideal for frosty mornings or windy walks and they look adorable too!

3. Layer Up with Jumpers Indoors

Even inside, greyhounds can get chilly, especially if your home has hard floors or draughty areas. A lightweight jumper or fleece helps your dog stay comfortable without overheating. Most greyhound parents tend to opt for a onesie pyjama style, which we must admit is very cute and cosy! Make sure you choose breathable, soft materials that are easy to wash.

4. Provide Cosy Bedding

A warm, fluffy bed is a must-have for a greyhound. They love soft, padded spots where they can stretch out and relax. Look for orthopaedic or memory foam beds with thick covers for joint support and insulation. Adding fleece blankets or thermal bedding can make it extra snug.

5. Use Heat Pads or Hot Water Bottles (Safely!)

For older greyhounds or those that really feel the cold, heat pads or covered hot water bottles can provide gentle warmth, especially in the evenings. Always make sure they’re pet-safe, well-covered, and never too hot to touch.

Try Not To Overheat

It’s natural to want to keep your greyhound warm, but try not to go overboard. If you’ve just adopted them, remember they may have come from kennels, and moving into a centrally heated home can already feel plenty warm. Over time, you’ll get to know how your greyhound handles hot and cold, but always keep an eye on them when using jumpers or snoods. If they’re panting, restless, or trying to take their layers off, they might be too warm or simply uncomfortable. Aim for that happy balance where they’re cosy, but not overheating. Hope these tips help!

Greyhounds might look sleek and strong, but when winter rolls in, they need a little extra help to stay warm. With layers, soft bedding, and a touch of TLC, your greyhound can stay as snug as they are stylish, all season long.

Keep an eye on their comfort, and remember: if you’d reach for a jumper, your greyhound probably needs one too!  To read more info blogs, click here.
