Owning a dog is one of life’s greatest joys, but it also comes with responsibility. Dogs rely on us for their health, safety and happiness. Each September, Responsible Dog Ownership Day reminds us of the commitment we make when bringing a furry friend into our lives. Whether you’re a new puppy parent or an experienced dog lover, here are a few ways to be a responsible dog owner every day!

Prioritise Vet Care

Regular check-ups, vaccinations and preventative treatments (like flea, tick and worm tablets) are crucial. A responsible dog owner never delays health care but does early detection to keep your dog healthier for longer.

Nutritional Treats and Food

Feed your dog a balanced diet tailored to their age, size and breed. Avoid human foods that are toxic to dogs, like chocolate or grapes. Fresh water should always be available. A natural treat diet, such as pigs’ ears, Ostrich Bones and 100% meat treats, are ideal as you aren’t putting unknown additives into your dog's body.

Socialise Your Pooch

Training isn’t just about commands and party tricks; it builds trust and keeps your dog safe. Socialisation with other dogs, people, and environments helps prevent anxiety and behavioural issues. It also helps them get used to other breeds of dogs, especially if you’ve adopted a retired greyhound.

Commit to Daily Walks

Every dog needs physical activity to stay happy and healthy. Whether it’s long walks, fetch in the garden, or agility training, regular exercise prevents obesity and strengthens your bond. Plus, it also helps you stay active and gain fresh air and make new memories with your four-legged friend.

Dispose of Your Dog’s Waste Correctly

Picking up after your dog shows respect for your community and protects the environment. Always carry bags on walks and dispose of waste responsibly. A tip would be to invest in a poo bag holder on your lead, so you never forget them.

Make sure you have Dog ID

Make sure your dog has an ID tag and is microchipped. Keep them on a lead in public areas and never allow unsupervised roaming, it’s essential for their safety and others’.

Responsible Dog Ownership Day is a perfect reminder to reflect on the joy our dogs bring and the responsibility we carry. By committing to their health, safety, and happiness, we ensure they live the best life possible, because that’s exactly what they give us in return.
