If you’ve ever visited a homing kennel or browsed adoption listings, you may have noticed a common theme: many of the dogs waiting the longest for homes are black. This is especially true for greyhounds. On our adoption platform, over 63% of the greyhounds currently waiting for adoption are black, making them the most overlooked colour within our partner homing kennels.

But why is this the case? And more importantly, why should you consider adopting one of these beautiful dogs?

The Challenge of “Black Dog Syndrome”

The idea of black dogs being overlooked in kennels is often called black dog syndrome. Sadly, dogs with darker coats spend significantly longer in homing kennels than their lighter-coloured counterparts.

There are a few reasons for this:

Photography challenges: Black coats can be harder to photograph, especially in poor lighting. A picture that doesn’t capture their sparkle means they may get fewer adoption enquiries online.

Perceptions of appearance: Some people mistakenly think black dogs look “too plain” or “less friendly,” which couldn’t be further from the truth.

Sheer numbers: In greyhounds especially, black is the most common coat colour, meaning there are simply more black greyhounds looking for homes at any given time.

The result? These affectionate, gentle dogs are often overlooked through no fault of their own.

Why Black Greyhounds Make Incredible Pets

Despite being overlooked, black greyhounds make some of the most loving and easy going companions you could ask for. Here are just a few reasons why:

1. Gentle and Affectionate

Greyhounds are often described as “couch potatoes.” They love nothing more than curling up beside their humans and enjoying a quiet life. Black greyhounds are no different, they’re affectionate, gentle and thrive on companionship.

2. Elegant and Striking

Far from being “plain,” black greyhounds are sleek, glossy and beautiful. Their shiny coats and soulful eyes make them stand out in person, even if photos don’t always do them justice.

3. Low Maintenance and Adaptable

Greyhounds, regardless of colour, are low-maintenance dogs. They need less exercise than many but will walk for as long as you’d like to walk for, they’re so versatile. They adapt well to home life. Black greyhounds are often calm, adaptable, and quick to settle into a routine.

4. Deserving of a Chance

Most importantly, black greyhounds deserve the same chance at a loving home as any other dog. Choosing to adopt one means giving a dog that’s often overlooked the opportunity to shine, and you’ll gain a loyal friend for life in return.

The truth is simple; colour doesn’t determine personality. Black greyhounds are just as affectionate, loyal and loving as their fawn, brindle, or white cousins. Sadly, they’re just waiting longer for people to notice them.

By choosing to adopt a black greyhound, you’re not only gaining a wonderful companion, but you’re also helping a dog that may otherwise be left waiting. With over 63% of the greyhounds on our platform being black, there’s never been a better time to consider opening your home and heart to one of these beautiful dogs.
