A person with a greyhound

As we celebrate all types of love this month, we’re sharing stories from all kinds of happily homed greyhounds, from quiet companions to playful family members. Today, we’re hearing from Shona, a volunteer at Whittingham Kennels, whose home is a wonderful example of how a retired racer can thrive in a busy, loving family environment.

Willow's New Family

Six months ago marked the beginning of an incredible new chapter for our greyhound, Willow.

I have volunteered for Whittingham for several years, and this is the second greyhound we have been lucky enough to rehome. Each experience has been unique, but welcoming Willow into our lives has been incredibly rewarding.

Willow came to us unfamiliar with family life, but it didn’t take long for her gentle personality to shine through. Within days, she had claimed the sofa as her own, filled our home with playful mischief, and reminded us how quickly love can grow.

She was somewhat of an exception to the typical greyhound stereotype. Always full of energy and curiosity, she was more interested in being involved than in sleeping the day away. With patience, time, and plenty of toys, she has blossomed into a happy, settled, and much-loved member of our family.

Willow is very loving, laid-back, and playful. She gets on well with all other breeds and lives happily with a small dog at home. She adores my young son (aged 11); they often play together, and she walks beautifully on the lead with him.

Greyhounds are addictive, and there is something very special about giving a retired racer a loving home.
