Home Is Where the Greyhound Is: Blossom's New Beginnings
In this heartwarming greyhound adoption story, GHUK staff Tom shares his own journey of bringing retired racing greyhound Blossom home with the support of Lincolnshire Greyhound Trust. From her calm first day in a quiet countryside bungalow to her playful “mad five minutes” and sofa snuggles, , Blossom’s transition into retirement shows just how beautifully greyhounds adapt to calm, home life, and why we all need a greyhound by our side.

As we celebrate all the different ways greyhounds find love and belonging this month, I’m sharing a story that’s especially close to my heart. What began as a connection to one special girl eventually led to a new chapter - one filled with quiet mornings, soft beds and the simple joy of home. With support from Lincolnshire Greyhound Trust, her transition into retirement was a smooth and thoughtful one.
This is her happily homed story (and mine!), told from the sofa we now share.
I had the privilege of knowing Blossom during her racing career, and when she retired, bringing her home was never in doubt… Bringing her home felt like the most natural next chapter. And now, it’s just the two of us..jpeg)
Bringing Blossom Home
I had prepared ourselves for a few teething problems, such as accidents in the house or struggling when left alone, but Blossom has been perfect since day one. She explored the bungalow calmly on her first day, sniffing each room carefully before finding her bed and deciding she was home. Within a short time she was going to the back door when she needed the toilet and settled quickly into a routine.
She adapted to the quiet of bungalow life really well. Household noises don't seem to bother her and she quickly learned where she was and wasn’t allowed. She enjoys her walks around the village and local nature walks and already has a favourite pub where she can indulge in a sausage roll! .jpeg)
Watching Her Bloom
At home she is wonderfully relaxed. She stretches out on the sofa as though she owns the place, and finds the warmest sunny patch in the garden with expert precision. Seeing such a graceful, dainty girl with legs in every direction, will never not make me smile.
As her confidence in a home has grown, so has her playful side. She now has bursts of excitement where she races around the living room and proudly rags her favourite unicorn toy as if she’s just won a trophy. Those mad five minutes are replaced quickly by another nap, she's a stereotypical lounger by heart!
She is incredibly affectionate and enjoys visitors, greeting them politely before demanding in for a cuddle. In the evenings she rests her head on my lap, looking up with those soft eyes, and in those quiet moments I especially appreciate our quiet life in the countryside together.
The Best Kind of Love
So, as we celebrate the best kind of love this month, I know what love really looks like.
It’s not grand gestures or dramatic moments. It’s early mornings when she stretches and yawns beside me. It’s the sound of her nails gently tapping across the floor to follow me from room to room. It’s sharing the sofa, adjusting a blanket over her, and knowing she's content.
Bringing her home may have felt like the natural next step, but the truth is she has given me far more than I could ever give her. In choosing to share my home with her, I gained quiet companionship, daily laughter, and a love that is steady and uncomplicated. Living alone, I knew I had a greyhound-shaped hole in my heart. For me, home truly is where the greyhound is, and I would never be without her.
