Play, Exploration & Early Development (3-12 Months)

At around three months old, greyhound puppies are full of curiosity and energy. They move into larger enclosures with their littermates, often with access to a field where they can run and play. Enrichment is essential during this stage, with marrow bones for chewing, toys for stimulation, and plenty of playtime. Puppies remain together as a litter, but a puppy from a different lineage may sometimes be introduced to encourage social development. Handlers form closer bonds with each puppy, ensuring they are well-handled and accustomed to human interaction. Puppies also become lead-trained and receive regular health checks, including nail trimming, teeth monitoring, and parasite treatments.

Nutrition & Comfort

Growing greyhounds require frequent, small meals to match their high metabolism. Their diet typically consists of specialised biscuits, cooked and raw meats, fish, offal, tripe, cheese, and supplements. Bedding varies based on the season and carer preference, with options including shredded paper, straw, shavings, or blankets. Some bedding choices may become the target of playful destruction as puppies grow more mischievous! As they reach nine months, puppies become more coordinated and agile. They spend their mornings and evenings playing and running with their littermates, gradually developing their speed and movement skills.

Maturing & Daily Routine (12-18 Months)

By twelve months old, greyhound puppies have reached their full height, but their muscles will continue to develop. Their daily routines include structured exercise and socialisation. They may be moved into smaller enclosures with a companion for closer monitoring. Greyhounds thrive on routine. A set schedule for feeding, exercise, and rest reduces anxiety and helps them feel secure. They typically have five to six play sessions per day, where they can run, explore, or relax in the sun. Regular enrichment is provided through toys, bones, and interactive play.

Grooming & Health Monitoring

Greyhounds are groomed several times per week, with teeth brushing, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and coat brushing. Young greyhounds tend to have thick, fluffy coats that require regular maintenance. They are closely monitored for any signs of discomfort, muscle strain, or minor injuries. Their diet continues to support muscle development, with high-protein foods like chicken, raw meat, and fish, alongside nutritional supplements for joint and muscle health.

The Road Ahead

As greyhounds reach eighteen months, they’ve grown from playful pups into confident young adults. Some will go on to begin a racing career, while others, if racing isn’t for them, will head straight into life as a beloved family pet. From tiny newborns to independent young greyhounds, their journey has been one of growth, learning, and transformation - and it’s only just beginning.
