A person with a greyhound

Volunteers are the heartbeat of every rehoming centre, often stepping in where resources are stretched, and helping to give each dog the best chance at finding a loving home. This season, we’re putting the spotlight on one of the incredible volunteers who go above and beyond to help greyhounds find their forever homes.

Located in Essex, Whittingham Kennels has helped rehome thousands of retired racing greyhounds since its founding and brings together a passionate team committed to every dog's journey. Hear from Charity Founder, Louise Clark, on why this special someone deserves the spotlight!

Meet Linda

"One of our star volunteers is Linda and Whittingham has come to rely on her for so much.  She is phenomenally generous with her time and donations and offers to do anything that is required.  This can range from the mundane and uninspired jobs to covering staff duties and helping on stalls to promote the Kennels.  Where would we be without her?!  She started walking dogs in April 2017 and has done over 3030 walks!  Her memory for dogs' names and dates is off the scale.  She's like a walking calendar!  So she's also really helpful for prompting us to remember other significant milestones too!

During a recent period where we were short-staffed, Linda started at 7.30am and did not sit down for many hours.  She also helps to test dogs' reactions around other breeds/town life by taking dogs away from the Kennels for a walk.  This really helps us assess the dogs for rehoming so we can honestly tell potential adopters about their reaction to other breeds or suitability for life in an urban setting.  All rehoming centres rely on volunteers and when they can be trusted to deal with any eventuality without supervision (like Linda always can), it is a total godsend.  Linda brings positivity and friendliness and helps alleviates the stress when the staff are under pressure.

Linda said, "I love going to Whittingham - I just enjoy myself and love the dogs"!

Come rain or shine, Linda is there to support the staff and other volunteers, be a listening ear and give the dogs the love and care they deserve.  She also keeps the local wildlife happy by feeding the birds!  If we could nominate her for a Damehood, we would!"
