June 1st - 7th is Volunteer Week: the perfect time to pause and say a heartfelt thank you to the people who give their time, energy, kindness, and support retired greyhounds across the UK. Volunteers are at the heart of so much of what we do, and their contribution reaches far beyond the tasks they complete on any given day.

It's easy to think of volunteering as something that happens quietly in the background, but the truth is that it has a huge impact. Every walk, every share online, every phone call, every event attended, every hour spent helping out, and every act of support adds up to something meaningful. For greyhounds waiting to be homed, that support can make all the difference.

Why Volunteers Matter So Much

Greyhound homing is built on care, consistency, and community. While there is so much that goes into preparing a greyhound for family life, volunteers help make that journey possible in countless ways. They bring extra hands, extra time, and extra heart.

Volunteers help extend the reach of the charity, whether that is by supporting dogs directly, helping spread awareness, assisting with admin, or lending a hand at events and fundraisers. They help do more of the things that matter most, and they help ensure that greyhounds receive the time and attention they deserve.

For many organisations, volunteers aren't just helpful, they're essential! Their support makes it easier to focus on the dogs, on adopters, and on the wider mission of finding safe, happy, forever homes for retired greyhounds. That support is something we never take for granted.

A Role for Every Skill

One of the best things about volunteering is that there really is a place for everyone. You don't need to have specialist experience or a perfect schedule to make a difference. What matters most is a willingness to help, a love of dogs, and an understanding that even small contributions can have a big impact.

There are so many ways to get involved, including:

  • Walking and spending time with greyhounds.
  • Supporting with kennel tasks and day-to-day care.
  • Helping at events and fundraisers.
  • Offering admin or behind-the-scenes support.
  • Sharing content and raising awareness online.
  • Fostering a greyhound and helping them settle into home life.
  • Supporting transport or other practical tasks.

Every role matters, every volunteer brings something valuable, and every hour given helps move the work forward in a real and tangible way.

What Volunteering Gives Back

Volunteering is often framed as something you do for others, and that is absolutely true. But it can also give something back to the volunteer too. Many people find that volunteering brings a sense of purpose, connection, and fulfilment that stays with them long after the task is done.

There's something special about being part of a team that shares a common goal. Volunteers often describe the joy of seeing a shy greyhound gain confidence, the satisfaction of knowing they have helped ease a busy day, or the happiness of being part of a dog’s journey to a new home. Those small moments matter. They remind us that kindness is never wasted.

For some, volunteering becomes part of their routine. For others, it is something they dip in and out of when life allows. However people choose to help, their contribution is meaningful. There's no single “right” way to volunteer - only the right way for that person, at that time, with the skills and energy they have available.

The Difference It Makes for Greyhounds

Greyhounds benefit directly from volunteer support in many ways. A calm walk, a familiar face, a little extra attention, or a helping hand behind the scenes can all contribute to a dog feeling more settled and more understood. For dogs who are adjusting to new routines or waiting patiently for their forever homes, that consistency is invaluable.

Volunteers also help give greyhounds more visibility. By supporting events, sharing posts, speaking to the public, or helping with fundraising, they help more people learn about the breed and the rewards of homing a retired racer. That awareness matters. It helps homing centres (and us!) reach more adopters, build stronger connections, and tell the greyhound story more widely.

And of course, there is the emotional impact too. Greyhounds are gentle, sensitive dogs, and they notice kindness. The time volunteers spend with them helps build trust, confidence, and comfort. That kind of support is part of what makes a successful homing journey possible.

The People Behind the Mission

One of the best parts of Volunteer Week is the chance to celebrate the people themselves. Behind every successful homing, every event, every fundraiser, every social post, and every calm kennel moment, there are people giving their time with care and commitment.

Volunteers often come from all walks of life, but they're united by a shared love of greyhounds and a belief in the importance of rescue and rehoming. Some may have supported homing centres for years, while others are just starting their volunteering journey. Some prefer hands-on work, while others are happiest helping quietly behind the scenes. Together, they form a community that makes a real difference.

That community spirit is something very special, especially in the greyhound community! It is built on kindness, patience, and a shared understanding that the small things matter. A reassuring presence, a willingness to help, a message shared at the right time all keep charity work moving forward.

A Heartfelt Thank You

This Volunteer Week, we want to say a sincere and heartfelt thank you to everyone who gives their time to support our partner homing centres and ourselves at Greyhound Homing UK. Thank you for walking, helping, fostering, fundraising, sharing, supporting, encouraging, and caring. Your kindness helps greyhounds every single day. It helps us continue our work and build a better future for every greyhound.

Thinking About Volunteering?

If you have ever thought about getting involved, Volunteer Week is a wonderful time to start. There are so many ways to help, and there may be a role that fits your time, interests, and confidence level better than you expect.

Whether you can offer a few hours here and there or are looking for a more regular way to support the charity, your time could make a real difference. Volunteering is not about being perfect, it's about being willing to help.
