Steve the Greyhound: A Soul Mate, a Healer and a Lifeline
Meet Megan and her touching story about a retired greyhound called Steve, who became her soul mate when times were tough.

Some dogs enter our lives and quietly transform them forever. For Megan, that dog was Steve, a retired racing greyhound who became her soul mate in every sense of the word. Recently, Steve the retired greyhound passed away, but the love and strength he gave to Megan and her family will remain a lasting legacy.
Megan and her husband adopted Steve during the Covid pandemic, a time of uncertainty and strain. Both working as key workers, they witnessed difficult and traumatic situations on a daily basis. For Megan, Steve became her anchor and her sanity during long, exhausting shifts, her comfort when panic attacks crept in, and her companion through moments when the world felt overwhelming. Calm, patient, and unfailingly gentle, Steve was more than a pet; he was a vital source of stability. Proving that retired greyhounds are ideal for most home situations.
Retired Greyhounds Being By Your Side
But Steve’s role in Megan’s life grew even deeper after a devastating accident. At 20 weeks pregnant, Megan dislocated her knee and suffered severe arterial damage that almost cost her a leg. She spent two months in hospital, followed by months of recovery at home, often bedbound. Through it all, the retired greyhound, Steve never left her side.
He seemed to understand her pain and limitations instinctively. He sat with her every day, learning how to navigate around her medical frame with care, then adjusting his pace to match her slow steps once she was able to walk again. When her daughter was born, Steve showed the same quiet wisdom: he was always present, always close, but gentle enough to give the baby space. He accepted treats with the softest bite, proving again and again just how special greyhounds can be as family companions.
Hospital Visits by Steve the Greyhound
Megan recalls visits from Steve to the hospital ward, tender moments of him resting his head on her growing bump, and the comfort he offered when trauma left her struggling with PTSD. In all those moments, Steve grounded her. He was her soul mate, her healer, and her constant friend. Megan not only adopted a retired greyhound, but ended up with a legacy that Steve was forming within the family.
Though saying goodbye to Steve has left a huge gap, Megan and her family have welcomed another retired greyhound, Bingo, into their lives. With a different personality but the same innate gentleness, Bingo has already become an important part of the family, adapting to Megan’s leg and forming a bond with her daughter.
Greyhounds Heal Your Heart
For Megan, Steve will always be irreplaceable, the greyhound who carried her through some of the hardest chapters of her life. But his story is also a reminder of just how extraordinary these dogs can be: resilient, intuitive, and endlessly loving.
“Steve will forever be my soul mate,” Megan says. “He was the perfect pet and the best breed ever. I’ll always carry him in my heart.”
