GREAT PETS

When greyhounds finish their racing career between the ages of 1 and 5 years old, they retire in every sense of the word. These friendly, gentle, loyal and good-natured dogs quickly adapt to life with any kind of family, often including other dogs, small furries and even cats.

A Pleasure to OWN

Owning a greyhound, a breed that can be traced back as far as 6,000 B.C. is one of life’s great privileges and pleasures.

Very Calm

There are countless misconceptions regarding greyhounds. Contrary to what you may think, greyhounds are generally very calm dogs, do not need very much exercise and can live very happily in small homes or flats as they are inclined to sleep for at least 18 hours per day. Many describe them as the cats of the dog world!

One of the Healthiest Breeds

As greyhounds are bred to perform, rather than look a particular way, they are also among the healthiest dogs you will find, so will be less likely to incur huge vet bills for you.

I’ve had retired greyhounds as pets since I was 19.

Shamrock was the 1st and my best mate. Greyhounds quickly adapt to homes and make friends with other breeds, love a walk. One or two short walks a day is plenty but they will happily enjoy exploring for miles as well. I’ve never been without a greyhound since adopting Shamrock. Cushie and Betsy followed soon after and 30 years later we now have 3 to 5 foster greyhounds learning home life with us readying them for adoption.

A greyhound as a pet?

What’s not to like. Professional athlete, turned couch potato, they come in all shapes, sizes and personalities. Good at adapting to fit into any home, they can be lazy, playful, funny, loyal and, most of all, provide unconditional love.

Greyhounds make amazing pets.

They are very good at adjusting into a new routine to suit your daily life, you just need to be patient with them as most things outside of the kennels will be new to them. They need to feel safe with you and their new environment, but they are very loyal dogs and make great companions so you will soon form a wonderful bond. They also love a sofa but once on the sofa, it will be hard to get them off!If you have time and love for a Greyhound, they really do make a great addition to any family, they are very affectionate.Warning though, once you have adopted one greyhound, it is hard to just have the one!
